They were over $220 million at the beginning of 2021. Having unsuccessfully tried to gain access to the drive eight times, and with only two more password attempts permitted before the device would permanently self-encrypt, he found himself unable to access his IronKey Bitcoin wallet.
A Reward Turned to Regret
Although Thomas feels like a “complete idiot” for forgetting the important code, he is not alone in this situation. Writing a simple code is not the only way to decrypt an IronKey USB. This Kingston Digital subsidiary sells extremely safe devices that could be compared to a highly accurate surgical procedure using nanotechnology.
A cybersecurity group called Unciphered claimed to have created a covert technique to get around the IronKey device’s 10-attempt limit, adding a twist to the IronKey Bitcoin loss case. The team was able to digitally simulate 200 trillion password attempts by breaking down a similar IronKey into its micro-components, removing tamper-proof layers with nitric acid, and employing microscopic imaging.
According to Unciphered, it broke down a device similar to Thomas’s into its most basic parts. After that, they used CT scanning to thoroughly examine and analyze the structure of everything.

“To fully reverse engineer the device, Unciphered scanned an IronKey with a CT scanner, then began the elaborate surgery necessary to deconstruct it. Using a precise laser cutting tool, they carved out the Atmel chip, which serves as the USB stick’s ‘secure enclave’ and holds its cryptographic secrets. They bathed that chip in nitric acid to ‘decap’ it, removing the layers of epoxy designed to prevent tampering. They then began to polish down the chip, layer by layer, with an abrasive silica solution and a tiny spinning felt pad, removing a fraction of a micron of material from its surface at a time, taking photos of each layer with either optical microscopes or scanning electron microscopes, and repeating the process until they could build a full 3D model of the processor.”
The method was not made public, but it was reported to have involved more than 120 years of combined research. The white-hat hackers approached Thomas with a possible solution to his problem.
Why Stefan Thomas Refused Help
To many people’s surprise, Stefan refused the offer. Why?
Thomas turned down Unciphered’s offer, despite their assurances and preliminary proof. He already had verbal agreements in place at the time with two other teams that were trying to decrypt the device. They would get a share of the 7,002 Bitcoin locked wallet in exchange for their success.
Whether the wallet was ever recovered has not yet been confirmed to the public, possibly for privacy and security reasons. According to some theories, the successful recovery may have been kept under wraps to prevent unwanted publicity.
